Teaching
Katie teaches private cello lessons to students throughout Philadelphia, Bensalem, Langhorne, Newtown, Fairless Hills, and Richboro in the comfort of their own
homes. This allows Katie to accommodate those families and individuals
with busy schedules that would otherwise not allow them to come to a studio or
other space. Lessons can also be taught out of Katie’s studio space in
her home, if desired.
As no two individuals learn the same way, Katie believes that teaching strategies should change from one lesson to another. Using her varied background as an educator, she is able to reach all levels and ages of students in a way that helps them to grow as cellists and musicians. Katie embraces each student’s playing and learning style, striving to help them to better their playing. In a caring and compassionate manner, she is able to motivate her students to play to the best of their abilities. She is known for making cello lessons not only informative, but also fun, upbeat, and engaging.
Thanks to her experience as a Music Theory Teaching Assistant while a graduate student at Penn State, Katie has been exposed to higher levels of music theory and history, along with cello pedagogy and literature. This knowledge gives her a deep understanding of all aspects of cello playing; an understanding that she hopes to impart on all of her students. Learning an instrument should be all encompassing, so Katie teaches not just notes and rhythms, but the theory and history behind the pieces and techniques.

Testimonials
"Katie has been a fantastic cello teacher -- her energy and patience have been limitless, a must when teaching a 5 year old. We feel that enjoyment and learning are equally important in the process for our daughter, and Katie has done a great job of ensuring that Charlotte continues to enjoy learning to play cello."

"Our daughter has worked with Katie for over a year studying the cello. She has progressed well beyond her school peers and has gained confidence in herself and her abilities. Katie’s teaching methods are what we attribute to our daughter’s success. Rather than Katie working directly from a single cello lesson book, she instructs different pieces of music to our daughter and allows her to choose what she wants to learn. She customizes the lessons to her current skill level while at the same time providing challenges to keep the learning process going. By Katie’s allowing our daughter to choose the cello piece that she wanted to learn, she became part of the teaching process. Katie is very enthusiastic about working with our daughter and translates the teaching into something that she can understand. Katie has exceeded any expectations we had and continuously demonstrates her devotion and talent as a teacher.
Katie has instilled her enthusiasm and love of playing the cello onto our daughter. I believe this contributed to our daughter’s having more incentive and motivation to practice and play. She eagerly practices during her free time, and is always humming the tunes and pieces she plays with Katie.
We are often able observe most of our daughter's lessons. This is where we witness the wonderful connection that has developed between teacher and student. Katie relishes in our daughter's accomplishments and acknowledges each newly learned measure of music. For our daughter, Katie has made learning the cello a magical thing.
Katie is not only friendly and patient, but also is good at gauging our daughter’s level of knowledge and ability. Her commitment to her students is evident. Katie sees each student as an individual and draws upon their strengths to teach them in ways that work best for them. I respect Katie for many of her qualities but most of all for her ability to connect with our daughter. Katie is a very positive and encouraging teacher who is able to make confident self-motivated cello players out her students. I highly recommend Katie as a cello teacher and consider it a pleasure to say that our daughter is lucky in having been blessed with such a bright and remarkably talented individual as Katie."
